For the model year 1998, i.e. with deliveries commencing from the second half of 1997 onward, some of the features of the Bentley Continental T became available on the new Bentley Turbo RT, which replaced the Bentley Turbo R. With an engine achieving 400 bhp and a maximum torque of 590 lb/ft (800 Nm), attained between 2000 and 3450 rpm, the experience of driving a Bentley RT was almost outside the normal frame of reference. The new Turbo RT's specification included a radiator mesh grille and colour-coded bumpers with bright mesh inserts. Those who were familiar with Bentley's history remembered that only a few years ago the Bentley Eight introduced as a beginner's model at a reduced price - distinguished itself from other Bentley motor cars by a wire mesh instead of a vaned grille. The new Bentley RT retailing at a fraction below 150,000 £ of course could be specified with a vaned grille at no extra cost...
